Frequently asked questions
How many funeral homes are there in Ohio?
Our directory currently lists 1,459 funeral homes and related providers in Ohio, across 88 counties. The count covers funeral homes, mortuaries and cremation providers found in public map data. It also includes 58 monument and headstone dealers, which are listed separately. Records can be out of date, so please call ahead to confirm.
Are there cremation services in Ohio?
Yes. We list 223 providers in Ohio that offer cremation, based on the source classification or the business name. Many funeral homes arrange cremation through a crematory they work with even when cremation is not in their name, so it is worth asking any funeral home directly.
Are there religious funeral homes in Ohio?
Yes. We have identified 2 Christian funeral homes and 2 Jewish funeral homes in Ohio, based on the recorded affiliation or the official name. Affiliations are never guessed, so other funeral homes may also serve your faith community; a local congregation can usually recommend one.
How do I compare funeral home prices in Ohio?
Under the Federal Trade Commission's Funeral Rule, a funeral home must give you an itemized General Price List when you ask about arrangements in person, and must answer questions about prices over the phone. You may choose only the goods and services you want, apart from a basic services fee and anything required by law, and you may buy a casket or urn elsewhere without paying a handling fee. Asking two or three funeral homes for their price lists is the most reliable way to compare.
What should I do right after someone dies?
If someone has died at home unexpectedly, call 911 first. If the death was expected, for example under hospice care, call the hospice team or the attending doctor, who can confirm the death. After that you can call a funeral home of your choice; most answer the phone at any hour and can arrange to bring the person into their care. In a hospital or nursing home, staff will ask which funeral home to contact. You do not have to decide on services during that first call.
